KFUEIT Hosts Faculty Development Workshop on "Mentoring Research Students - The Scientific Method"

BASR & ORIC, KFUEIT successfully organized a comprehensive faculty development workshop titled "Mentoring Research Students - The Scientific Method." The session was led by the Vice Chancellor of KFUEIT, Prof. Ir. Dr. Amir Azam Khan, who served as the Resource Person, imparting invaluable insights on research methodology, experimental design, and effective student supervision.

The workshop aimed to equip university faculty with advanced mentoring skills and a deeper understanding of the structured scientific method, essential for guiding postgraduate researchers.

Prof. Dr. Amir Azam Khan opened the session by outlining the critical stages prior to conducting research, emphasizing the importance of thorough literature reviews, identifying research gaps, and the meticulous preparation of research proposals and synopses. He placed a strong emphasis on the multifaceted role of a research supervisor, which includes continuous mentoring, technical assistance, and consultation from the planning stage through to the final thesis and publication drafts.

"Observation is the key to successful research. Whether it is Newton observing a falling apple or understanding the chemical reactions in everyday baking, a good researcher is fundamentally a good observer and a good philosopher," remarked Prof. Dr. Amir Azam Khan during his address.

To bridge the gap between theory and practice, the Vice Chancellor utilized a relatable, real-world example. Furthermore, the session highlighted the vital, yet often overlooked, aspect of research communication. Utilizing graphical data on audience attention spans, Prof. Dr. Khan illustrated that audience engagement peaks during the first five minutes of a presentation. He advised researchers to front-load their presentations with clarity and impactful visuals, underscoring that content, style, delivery, and a strict respect for time allocation are the core attributes of a successful scientific talk.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, leaving the KFUEIT faculty inspired and better equipped to foster a culture of rigorous scientific inquiry and high-quality research mentoring at the university.
