Photoluminescence (Fluorescence) Spectrometer (PL)

Agilent Cary Eclipse Fluorescence Spectrophotometer

The Cary Eclipse is a research-grade photoluminescence spectrophotometer that measures the light emitted by a sample following excitation, providing steady-state fluorescence, phosphorescence, chemiluminescence, bioluminescence, and time-resolved phosphorescence data. Its pulsed-xenon light source flashes only during data acquisition — eliminating continuous sample illumination, minimizing photobleaching, and giving the instrument a working lamp lifetime of roughly ten years without measurable output degradation.

A unique go-stop-flash monochromator drive delivers scan rates of up to 24,000 nm/min without peak-position shift, enabling full-spectrum acquisition in under three seconds and kinetic data collection at up to 80 points per second. Red-sensitive photomultiplier detectors extend usable range to 900 nm without compromising UV sensitivity, and the large, open sample compartment — combined with inherent room-light immunity — accommodates cuvettes, micro-volume cells, solid samples, fiber-optic probes, and microplates.

Analytical Capabilities & Compatible Sample Types

Any species that fluoresces, phosphoresces, or luminesces — in solution, as a solid, or as a surface coating.

  • Liquids & Solutions — Dyes, fluorophores, quantum dots, proteins, and biomolecules in standard or micro-volume cuvettes.
  • Solids, Powders & Films — — Optical brighteners, phosphors, coatings, and gemstones via the solid sample holder or fiber-optic probe.
  • High-Throughput Formats — 96- and 384-well microplates for screening and assay development.
  • Temperature-Dependent Studies — Protein folding/denaturation and FRET assays via thermostatted cell holder.
