PCR Lab

The PCR Lab combines the complete workflow for nucleic-acid work, from sample homogenization and thermal amplification to product visualization and gel-based fragment analysis.

Sample prep is handled by the Thermo Scientific Basic Vortex Mixer and the Precision GP 05 general-purpose water bath/sonicator, amplification runs on the SimpliAmp Thermal Cycler with independent VeriFlex temperature zones, and products are separated on the Owl D2 wide-format gel system before visualization on the iBright 1500 imaging system. Sample integrity and reagent storage are supported by the Eppendorf 5420 microcentrifuge, the Bioevopeak bullet ice maker, and the Eppendorf New Brunswick Innova 40 incubator shaker for cell culture and expression work.

Analytical Capabilities & Compatible Sample Types

The PCR Lab suite together supports the full pipeline from crude biological sample to visualized, quantified nucleic-acid or protein data.

  • Nucleic-Acid Amplification — Standard and fast-chemistry PCR, gradient-equivalent optimization via VeriFlex zones, and multiplex protocol development on the SimpliAmp cycler.
  • Sample Concentration & Cell Disruption — Heating, incubation, and sonication of aqueous samples in the GP 05 water bath for lysis and enzymatic reactions.
  • Nucleic-Acid/Protein Pelleting & Purification — High-speed spins for spin-column nucleic-acid purification, gel-extraction workflows, and PCR-tube processing on the Eppendorf 5420.
  • Gel Electrophoresis & Fragment Sizing — High-throughput DNA fragment screening and PCR product analysis for 10–80 samples per gel on the Owl D2-BP wide system.
  • Gel/Blot Imaging & Quantitation — Fluorescent, chemiluminescent, and colorimetric imaging of western blots and nucleic-acid gels with on-board densitometry on the iBright 1500.
  • Microbial/Cell Culture — Shaking incubation of bacterial, yeast, and other cultures up to 3 L in flasks for plasmid DNA production and protein expression on the Innova 40.
