Centre for Water, Land and Ecosystem
Name of Centre: Centre for Water, Land and Ecosystem (CWLE)
Introduction:
Centre for Water, Land and Ecosystem (CWLE) aims to serve as a hub with a focus on water, land and ecosystem conservation and a nexus between them to address the most pressing issues in the water, energy and food sectors with solutions that are driven by innovative practices and sustainable technological interventions.
The research activities were started in 2022. Recently, the project activity for water productivity enhancement using sensor technology in collaboration with IWMI-Pakistan has been completed. Some ongoing research activities are as follows:
- Implementing IoT-based surface water management system at KFUEIT
- Installing Automatic surface flow monitoring and groundwater management at KFUEIT research farms
Moreover, some advanced water management and soil health improvement technologies will be introduced intended to expand the research activities related to the agriculture ecosystem. So that the nexus approach could be used for the better management of the resources and ensuring food security.
Aim/ Scope: CWLE aims to serve as a hub with a focus on water, land and ecosystem conservation and a nexus between them to address the most pressing issues in the water and energy and food sectors with solutions that are driven by innovative practices and sustainable technological interventions.
Centre Objectives:The overall objective of the Centre is to introduce new and innovative technologies and propose a better policy framework for sustainable food, water, land and ecosystem through research initiatives.
The research will provide the implications for managing the water resources, landuse/ landcover, agronomic activities, soil and ecosystem at different spatial scales i.e., catchment, command and field levels due to the existing policies. Based on the results, a better policy framework will be proposed to manage these resources.
The research will also focus on the application of saline groundwater for increasing land and crop water productivity, and soil and water quality improvement for irrigation aimed for better cropping and soil health in irrigated as well as desert areas.
Research: The staff at CWLE will carry out both theoretical and applied work in water, cropping patterns, soil and eco-system related areas. Their research will encompass science, technology, practice and policy.
Location: Initially, the Centre office will start its activities within the vicinity allocated by the competent authority at Khwaja Fareed University of Engineering and Information Technology (KFUEIT) Rahim Yar Khan. Generally, the CWLE will conduct the research for Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) and Indus River Basin (IRB). However, the focus of the research will be to provide the solutions for the issues of local and global challenges starting from the issues prevailing in the locality i.e., Rahim Yar Khan District.
